Karl Marx was born on May 5th 1818 in Trier, Germany, which was then known as the Kingdom of Prussia. Karl was a philosopher, economist, sociologist, journalist, and revolutionary socialist. His work in economics laid the basis for much of the current understanding of labor and it’s relation to capital, and subsequent economic thought. He was born into a wealthy upper middle-class family. He attended school at the University of Bonn and later he studied law and philosophy at the University of Berlin, where he became interested in the philosophical ideas of the Young Hegelians. The Young Hegelians were a group of German intellectuals who wrote about the legacy of Georg Wilhelm Friedrich. They drew on his idea that the purpose and promise of history was the total negation of everything conducive to restricting freedom and reason; and they proceeded to mount radical critiques. First of religion and then of the Prussian political system. They ignored anti-utopian aspects of Friedr ich’s thought that some have interpreted to mean that the world has already essentially reached perfection. After Karl finished school and earned a doctorate from the University of Jena in 1841, he wrote for Rheinische Zeitung, a radical newspaper in Cologne. During this time he began to work on his theory of the materialist conception of art.
